This is a provisional file. The illustrative slideshow is still unfinished. Nevertheless the audio is all here. And it is a radio play after all (!). It is also all in French but don't worry; I will translate/subtitle it all shortly. Fourth episode of a radio serial. Paul Laurence Dunbar's "A Misty Day" (Lyrics of Love & Laughter) read LIVE by OÁC

Sunday 4 March 2018 in the early afternoon; I venture to introduce a sample of Paul Laurence Dunbar's poetry to a French audience. The place is Point Éphémère, a public joint which has been hired by the association "Le Carillon" for an afternoon of feasting around social activism and solidarity with the homeless and underprivileged. I bet none of these people have ever even heard the name of Pa...
Tribute to Leonard Cohen: "Hallelujah" LIVE by OÁC + ZeJam (1st edit)

Poetry Reading #25 makes use of whatever is left of my singing voice. After the decease of a poet of the calibre of Leonard Cohen, I felt that I had to leave Shakespeare's quadricentennial alone for a while. Same thing for the centenary of the Irish uprising. We've had insanely few opportunities to rehearse (and never with the whole of the musicians - only the keyboardist/frontman, Nicolas). Yo...

This is the SATB version of Byrd's "Ave Verum Corpus" used with "Phœnix & Turtle". It appears again in the live of Sonnet 130. For those who like the music used with the poem, we thought they might be pleased to hear it on its own. Do not ask me who the performers are. I downloaded this audio track from a site of royalty-free music; I remember it was free to use without restriction but I was in...

Translation: Brothers, men who live after us, Let not your hearts be hardened against us, Because, if you have pity for us poor men, God will have more mercy toward you. You see us here attached five or six: 5 When our flesh that was nourished so well Is over time devoured and putrified, And we, the bones, have become cinders and powder. Let no one laugh at our misfortune: But pray that God absolve us all! 10 2. If we call you, brothers, you ought not To have disdain even though we were killed By law. Often, you know That not all men have a righteous mind; Excuse us, now that we have passed, 15 Toward the son of the Virgin Mary, That her grace will not be slow for us, Preserving us from the infernal fire. We are dead, no soul harries us; But pray that God absolve us all! 20 3. The rain has washed and purified us, And the sun has dried and blackened us: Magpies, crows have dug out our eyes And pulled out our beards and eyebrows. Never do we have rest; 25 The changeable wind blows us first this way, then that, To its pleasure without ceasing, Our skin has more bird peckings than if it were sewed. Do not leave our company then; But pray that God absolve us all! Prince Jesus, who is lord of all, Keep us from the tyranny of Hell: Let the Devil have no claim over us Men, make no mockery here; But pray that God absolve us all! 35

Dear Italo, one of the aspects of this poem that makes it so fascinating is that it is very much in the hermetic tradition. Understanding may come to you if you consider that prior to San Francesco d'Assisi, there was Farid ud Din Attar. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_of_the_birds

@ I get obsessed with poems occasionally and this one grabbed me straight away. I love its contradictions - it’s allusion to two states of being being seemingly incompatible and even disapproved of, coming together despite it (but again there is always distance between the turtle and his queen). I find it a very beautiful lament. The fact that it’s a scene of catastrophe, or post-catastrophic, yet deftly weaves from truth and beauty and then reason and love is really quite impressive. I absolutely adore it

@ and I came across it in The Ancestor Game by Alex Miller, an acclaimed author from Australia. The book won the Miles Franklin Award, Australia’s most prestigious literary prize. Also have to say the first 4 lines of the threnos popped into my head when, on a recent visit back to my childhood home, I was looking at my mother’s ashes in an urn on a shelf. I googled the the poem and it just overwhelmed me from the get go. Also love the way it sets up the rules early on before getting to the anthem. Great stuff.

Thanks an awful lot for your sympathetic comment, "mop and bucket". Indeed the emotional impact which is inherent in the writing of poetry must find its correspondance in the actor's rendition. To me, a poem is no different from a monologue in a play; it is spoken by a character who's got a life of his own. Hence, a motivation of his own,

The one and only version done right!

This version! ... Is read in a way that amplifies the impact of an already ground-shaking poem. I have fallen in love with these words and recite them from time to time. I find it amazing how words delivered in a particular way, with arcs of intensity and elegantly placed silences can move one's BEING back to who we really are... AND! to see again the potential we all have in our journeys from the early beginnings to the very end.

Dear Jp, have a look at this one too: ua-cam.com/video/Te2JILEXqso/v-deo.html It was the original cut (recorded on 25 May and uploaded on 5 June 2014). I thought that Kipling & John Newton went well together. If you are interested, I will explain to you why I had to release a second cut (27 August) restricted to Kipling's poem and excluding the John Newton hymn.

@@Jp-ru4mg as you can see, the recital was a double bill. The young ladies surrouding me were all members of the "Gospel for Hope" choir.

@@Jp-ru4mg, As the choir had prepared twenty hymns, Roland Bidon asked me to limit myself to two poems. I chose François Villon's "Frères Humains aka Ballad of the Hanged" (after all it was a Parisian audience) and kept Kipling's "IF" for the conclusion. The contact with the ladies was good, especially with the young Caucasian with the turquoise scarf, and also with Sr. Marie-Catherine, the Franciscan nun who founded the choir and whom can be seen here seated at the keyboard. I was quite pleased to share the bill with a Gospel Choir. I love Gospel Song.

Wow! This was the final piece I read as part of the Shakespeare 2020 project (reading the entire canon in a year. Yeah, I'm a wee bit behind.) Your reading sent chills down my spine. What an incredible way to end a year with the Bard. Thank you so much.
